Earlier this week, word arrived from Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake isn't being worked on in any capacity. However, there's now conflicting information, this time courtesy of Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.
According to the reporter, he's heard from two sources at Saber Interactive that they're still working on the game.
The remake project is apparently still in active development, then, so perhaps it isn't quite as doom and gloom as Grubb claimed.
The situation doesn't seem especially sunny either, however; initially in the works at Aspyr Media, which has a history of reviving old Star Wars games, production switched over quite suddenly to Saber Interactive, and we've heard nothing since. It appeared for a second that the game was being brushed under the carpet, but the removal of trailers and the like was actually down to expired music licences.
Schreier's sources have offered a new hope, as it were, that the game will see the light of day, but when that is remains a mystery.

Just forget about this game till better times.
If it eventually comes out from ashes it will be a pleasant surprise. If not — you won't loose anything.

Since Sony were publishing it I would have preferred if they had a more hands on approach and gave the project to either one of their own studios or a trusted 2nd party.
Well if Jason says so then i believe it.
Three likelihood is that Disney came along and angrily said "fix this" to someone in charge, so it's going to get worked on in some capacity. It probably would've been smarter to just give it to Bioware, who made the original game.
@AdamNovice Them or Disney. This is a third-party game with an IP attached to it. It's probably all Sony can really do until there's a more complete product.

It honestly baffles me as to how they can make such a mess of a remake. Sony should have offered Bluepoint's expertise to help with it.
This should definitely have just been a full technical rebuild like Demon’s Souls, Shaow of the colossus etc.
Bluepoint would have got this done by now.

So basically Sony wants to have nothing to do with this project anymore, but Saber is still keep working on it in hope that they will secure new publisher.
@AdamNovice Just because Sony has a publishing deal for this on Playstation, doesn't mean they get a say in the development or can just "give" it to one of their own studios. This isn't a first party game.
I honestly would prefer it just be canceled. I have zero faith a modern remake would respect the original work enough to leave the original gameplay/narrative alone, and with it being in development hell it's going to be even harder to produce a solid final product.
Looking forward to the documentary of the behind the scenes on this one when it gets released a decade later.
@DonaldMcRonald Grubb said the project is dead and Sony wants out from it based from his source from Sony. He just wrongly assumed that project is dead because Sony have no interest in funding it anymore.
Schreier's sources are from Saber Interactive (developer). And they are still working on the game.
So, who will fund the development if Sony is out? Hardly Embracer (owner of Saber) since they have huge financial issues themselves.

Or I'm sure it's coincidence that Sony deleted KOTOR remake announcement from their official YT channel, social media and their own blog, right? And CEO of Embracer refused to comment on status of the project. It really sounds like everything is going smoothly.
@Godot25 That's not what Jeff Grubb said. He referred to Sony "stepping away and scrubbing mention of the game from social media", without stating that this was coming from a source. This is essentially just his speculation based on Sony removing mentions of the game, which is public knowledge, and which Sony attributed to expired music licences.
Whether you believe that last bit is another matter, but it's not like he claimed a source at Sony said they were cutting ties.
Edit: checked the video again and he did add later on that he heard "echoes" of Sony not wanting anything to do with it, so it's a little bit more than I initially said, but still. Far from definitive, I would argue.

After Schreier posted his "game is not dead" he said: "I'm happy to hear this. Like I said — this game is very unlikely to happen without a partner like Sony. And Sony seems to want nothing to do with it now. Maybe someone at Saber gets this together to pitch to someone else."
@Godot25 I'm still not seeing him refer to any Sony sources in any of his quotes, unlike Schreier who specifically mentions sources at Saber. That's the difference, it feels like speculation from Grubb.
It's not conflicting information. Jeff Grub gave his opinion. He had no insider knowledge on it. You shouldn't have reported it as news in the first place.

If it restarted development, we probably won't see it for another 3-5 years. I think it's worth waiting for if it means we get a much better game than what it might have been.
Schreier's 2 sources say they still working on it. Those 2 sources are probably the only 2 people working on it after all the layoffs Embracer has been doing.
This is what happens when too much stock is put into leaks, insiders, rumours and speculation. It always baffles me whenever something like this is reported as news.
